Definition: The GATE program is a comprehensive continuum of services and program options responsive to the needs, interests, and abilities of gifted students and based on philosophical, theoretical and empirical support. Program ElementsCluster classes consist of students who have tested as GATE identified (using the Raven test) and students who are high performing who have teacher recommendations. These classes are capped with a 36 student average and follow the district's type B model. Seminar classes consist only of students who have scored in the top1% on the Raven. Seminar classes are capped at 25 students. While GATE identified students are enrolled in Math and Science courses, Correia's GATE course designation refers only to the Humanities (English and history) classes. Curriculum Differentiation. The Correia program focuses on thematic units, problem-based learning, Socratic seminar, curriculum compacting, and depth & complexity icons to add depth and breadth to GATE curriculum. The use of such strategies encourages open-ended lessons and exploratory learning. Enrichment Activities.
GATE/Seminar TeamThe GATE/Seminar team consists of English and History teachers who have completed or are enrolled in the San Diego Unified School District's GATE teacher certification training. The Seminar Task Force and District Advisory Council help to plan and steer focus of the program. The Distinguished Lecture Series provides support for parents faced with the challenge and responsibility of raising a GATE identified child. Parents, you can access your child's reading scores and suggested reading for his or her reading level. Click on the reading list link and follow the directions. The suggested list is provided by the State of California and is based on the STAR test results for your child. |
